The Road to Eastbourne Tennis Tournament

On Tuesday 20th May, 8 children from year 4 went to West Worthing Tennis Club, to play in the next round of the ‘Road to Eastbourne Tournament.’
There were 6 schools competing; each school had won a previous round to qualify for their place in the tournament. The prize was a chance to play on the grass courts at Devonshire Park club in Eastbourne, on 'finals day' of the Aegon International tournament. This tournament takes place in June, and is competed in by professional players who want to prepare their grass court skills in advance of Wimbledon fortnight.
To win this amazing prize, the children needed to compete as a team in several relays that tested their agility, balance and co-ordination.
There was stiff competition from: Holmbush, Downsbrook, St Margarets, Summerlea and Lyminster schools. Half of our team went on to play tennis matches on mini grass courts, while and the other half continued to complete in timed skills tests.
Both the girls and boys teams had some tough tennis matches; at the end of the tournament all the points from every event were added together to determine the result. It was a real team effort.
Then the results were announced…
Holmbush & St Margarets came joint 5th
Summerlea  came 4th
Lyminster came 3rd
Downsbrook came 2nd
And…VALE came 1st

On Saturday 21st June all these children will be going to the Eastbourne Aegon International tournament, to compete in the Sussex Schools finals. It will be held on the same day as the ladies finals, so don't forget to bring an autograph book with you!
I was very proud of your teamwork and sense of fair play. You were all a credit to the school. Well done and congratulations, from Mrs C :)
