Bottles and Pitch 4JP

In our science lessons about sound, we have started to look at what pitch is and how it can be changed.  We learned about the different frequencies of high and low sounds and how fast the vibrations in the air particles are.  Using bottles of the same size, we created different pitches, even trying to create the nursery rhyme, Mary Had a Little Lamb, using the pitches we'd created.

Play Your Cards Right 4JP

At the Summer Fair on Friday, our stall was based on the classic game, Play Your Cards Right.  Here are some photos of us running it!

Sound and Water 4JP

Today we investigated whether sound travels in water by using a brave volunteer! What do you think we found out?

Magic Squares 4JP

Today, our maths warm up turned into a whole lesson as we investigated Magic Squares.   Magic squares are 9 numbers laid out in rows or columns of 3 where every row, column or diagonal adds up to the same number; for us it was 15.   First, we completed a partially full Magic Square.  This took us only seconds as we had to work out the difference and put the numbers in.  Next, we started with a blank square and had to put in the digits 0-9 so that the Magic Square's total was 15.  This was harder but these 6 children were the first to manage it.  What do you notice about their squares?

You can play around with Magic Squares at home by clicking here.

Learning About Sound 4JP

This week we are learning about sound in Year 4.  We played with some tuning forks and ping pong balls to find out how sounds are made.  We felt our vocal chords vibrate and listened to how high and low sounds vibrate differently.

Here are some photos from the afternoon!
