Cairo by Evie 4JP

We have been doing some Multi-Sensory Locational Writing about Cairo.  This is Evie's fabulous work. Please leave her a comment to let her know what you thought of it - she might even reply!

As I hopped off the brown, old boat, the scent of smoking drifted down the damp, stone alleyway.  As fast as a cheetah, I swiftly broke into a run away from the smell.  Panting with effort, I finally reached the other side.  People dressed head-to-toe in jet-black and bright white robes slowly wandered down the street and into the shadows of tall, towering buildings that blotted out the sun.  Ear- piercing shouts came from the distance, where the shops were.  Unusually, the people stared at me with their big, wide eyes, like stripey, orange tigers following prey with narrow, glaring, green eyes.

Ignoring the people, I strolled down to where the shouts came from.  I finally understood.  They were the salesmen.  Beside them was a spooky, stone castle that loomed over me, like a skyscraper's shadow.  Gagging, I caught a waft of the camels.  Their smell hung in the air like a never-ending pong.  Just above the sound of the noisy crowd cam the slash of a whip.  It cracked through the air and hit the horse with a slap.  The black horse gave out a mighty neigh as it reared up and galloped through the crowd.  They separated into two groups, screaming with panic.  I ran away but other people were faster.  Carelessly but panicked, people shoved their way through the crowd and found what they were looking for: shelter.

Smooth leather and the furry, brown skin of horses rattled and fell as the horse was galloping through the city.  Soon, everything was back to normal, but people came out of the shelter shouting while other people argued.  Suddenly, I didn't feel at home any more.  I felt homesick.  There was a massive lump in my throat. I couldn't speak. I was too sad.
