Getting Ready to Write!

Today in our English lessons we were preparing to write Multi-Sensory Locational Writing (MSLW) about the inside Tutankhamun's tomb. Firstly, in order to put ourselves in the shoes of Howard Carter, we looked at a photograph of the tomb door seal. It's amazing to think that Howard Carter would have been the first person in about 3000 years to enter the tomb!

We came up with some fantastic vocabulary to describe how Howard Carter may have been feeling when he looked inside the tomb for the first time. My particular favourite was the word "apprehensive" - well done, Zaki for that contribution!

We then came up with sentences about looking inside the tomb for the first time. The children worked in groups to create these and jotted as many ideas down on paper as they could think of.

They had the challenge of using THE MORE, THE MORE sentences, LIST sentences and SIMILE sentences, as well as any other descriptive sentences they could think of. This was the first time we had used THE MORE, THE MORE sentences and the children were great at them! Here are some of our sentences below:

Keep a look out for our finished MSLW on inside Tutankhamun's tomb. We can't wait to share it!

  2. Hello Year 4 Vale,

Being a keen writer and a member of Team 100WC and Team 5SC, I was interested in your "Getting Ready to Write!" post. Your examples were impressive.

Descriptive sentences can enhance writing so a reader can more easily imagine the scenes the author describes. You may remember a favourite book where the author not only shares a world they create, they share it in such a way you can imagine their world. That is the power of descriptive language.

    Well done, everyone. :)
